Godknows Pomerai

About me

Hello, I’m Godknows Pomerai and I am the eldest of five children, with three brothers and two sisters. I grew up in Mutare, spent parts of my childhood in Harare and our rural home in Bikita. My education spanned Zimphos Primary School and high schools including Danhiko, Tafara, and Nyamauru. These varied environments enriched my cultural appreciation and life perspective.

From Lab to Canvas: A Journey from Science to Art

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Zimbabwe and currently teach Chemistry. My art education is informal, shaped by mentorship from other artists, including my lecturer, Professor Benhura, who encouraged my dual pursuits in science and art.
My passion for drawing began in childhood, nurtured through mentorship. Weekends painting with my friend Ishmael and guidance from artistic mentors played a crucial role. After completing my Biochemistry degree in 2018, I turned my art hobby into a career, selling artworks and finding solace and purpose in painting.
Struggling with depression and drug abuse, I found that art provided a calming distraction. My goal is to convey peace and a sense of belonging through my work. For example, my piece „Show Me Your Pain“ addresses the hidden pain of verbal and emotional abuse.

Art and Society:

I aim to spread optimism, peace and hope, addressing social issues like drug abuse and gender-based violence. My work reflects the roles of men, women and children in traditional Zimbabwean culture, while also considering the impacts of globalization.
Art plays a crucial role in societal awareness, from posters and murals during the COVID-19 pandemic to advertising. I promote art at the school where I teach through an Art Club, nurturing the next generation of artists.
I aspire to open a private gallery and studio to exhibit art and support visual artists. Inspired locally by Barry Lungu and Keith Zenda, and internationally by Omar Ortiz, I advise young artists to remain consistent and patient in their pursuit of success.
