VA Chari
About me
My name is Wa Charie, but I was originally known as ‘Mano Child’. This name comes from my childhood. I am the eldest of three siblings and have one brother and one sister. My parents are both deceased and my family, especially my mum, has always been my biggest support.
An Artist by Tradition
My career as an artist did not start consciously – I come from a family of artists. My mother, who had a great passion for old music, introduced me to different styles of music at an early age. Although I tried to stay away from music at first, I always found my way back to it.
My music is strongly influenced by personal experiences and losses, especially the death of my father had a great influence on my artistic work. Themes such as love, heartache and different life situations are reflected in my songs. I try to transform the emotions and experiences of my surroundings into music, be it joy or sadness.
Follow Your Heart, Stay Grounded
There were many challenges along the way, especially in the difficult economic situation in Zimbabwe. Nevertheless, the joy that my music brought to others gave me the strength to keep going. Today I earn my living mainly through music. I am not only a musician, but also a producer and write songs for other artists. I also run a small farm.
Zimbabwean culture is deeply rooted in my music. I sing in both Shona and English, but I express myself best in my mother tongue. Music is a universal language and has the power to connect people across cultural and linguistic boundaries.
Musician, Producer, and Farmer
I have big plans for the future.I want my music to reach every corner of the world and touch people everywhere. Many great artists have inspired me, including local legends like Dr Oliver Mtukudzi and international stars like Michael Jackson.
For young artists in Zimbabwe, I have this advice: follow your heart, but stay grounded and listen to the feedback of others. It is important to listen to advice in order to develop.
Music accompanies me all day and all night. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and work on new ideas. My wife, who is a writer herself, supports me. We inspire each other.
I’m looking forward to continuing to create music, to touch the world with it and I’m happy if you accompany me on my journey.
